Good Names For Dogs
Getting a pet is a very emotional and memorable phase in a person’s life. It’s a long term
commitment and a very lovable one too! Watching a newborn puppy grow into a full
grown dog feels amazing, almost like an achievement. There are lots of things to be taken
care of after you get a pet, the first one being naming it. You should not rush into naming
your pet. Because once a pet identifies itself with a particular name it is very difficult for
them to relate to another one. So take your own time to get to know your pet better and
name him/her accordingly.
The name must be short and easy to pronounce and also easy for your dog to relate
to. Shorten the name or derive other nicknames for your dog only after your dog gets
familiar with its original name. Familiarizing the dog with his/her name is little time
consuming but trust me it is definitely worth your time. Treat your dog with little rewards
such as a tidbit of their favorite biscuit every time he/she respond to their names and
come to you. These are the initial steps of pet care.
You should know the temperament of the dog very well and chose an appropriate
name. It would be very awkward if you named a very friendly dog grumpy or similar.
The name of the dog reflects what you think about your dog and also forms the first
impression about the dog in public. Try to choose bright and happy names for your dog.
Most people choose a name for their dogs based on its gender. They choose a very macho
and strong name for male dogs like Rover, Samurai etc. Whereas for females they opt for
soft and pretty names such as Elisa, Chloe, Nichole etc.
People often name their pets on their coat colour and shape of the body. Names
like Bruno, Cinnamon, Snowy, Blacky, Ebony etc give out an impression of their
colour even before we see them. Names like Fluffy make the dog sound chubby
and small. Tinkerbell, Pixie, Tidbit etc are very common names for small dogs.
People also name their pets after celebrities, artists and even food items. All of us must be
familiar with the iconic character Jughead of Archies Comics and his dog named Hotdog.
Then again names like Cocoa, Brownie, Sugar etc are pretty popular names. I have come
across so many dogs with names such as Brad, DaVinci, Michelangelo etc. People with
a sense of humor give the weirdest and funny names to their dogs. If they feel their dog
is very brainy and smart they go to the extent of naming it after scientists like Einstein or
Newton.
While you select the name of your puppy, picture a full grown dog and not the cute little
pup that you see right then. A name like Pooh might sound cute for a German Shepherd
puppy, but it wouldn’t sound anywhere close to ‘cute’ for a fully grown German
Shepherd. That is all there is to naming your dog really, not such a daunting task is it?
Be a little quirky and experiment a little keeping in mind the dignity of your pet. After
all ‘A dog is man’s best friend’ and I don’t think you would want to offend your best
friend!
