Tips For Preventing Giving Your Pet a Stupid Name

Naming a dog is a fun process but is also one of the most difficult decisions to be taken. This is because it is difficult to choose from the plethora of dog names. Or sometimes people do not understand the importance of giving a sensible and good name to a pet. They should understand that the pet is not just an ‘object’ that they possess; they are a very important part of their lives. So they should be treated like a family member or a friend and named likewise. Naming a pet is probably the first puppy care tip. Here are some tips that should be kept in mind while naming your pet and saving yourself and your pet from being laughed at:

  1. People often name their dog based on what he or she looked like when it was a tiny puppy. But they don’t always remain the same. For example the name ‘honeypuff’ would have sounded adorable for a tiny puppy but not so much for a fully grown Doberman.
  2. People in their attempt to be unusual and quirky give their dogs the weirdest and stupidest names which only cause embarrassment later. You can imagine for yourself how stupid it would seem if a woman wakes up shouting ‘nightmare’ to call her dog in the middle of night.
  3. No matter how much politics influences you or attracts you DO NOT name your puppy after a famous political figure. You don’t want be seen chasing your dog shouting “Come back Lincoln”. It would not be a very pretty sight! Also you might offend someone. So why take chances right?
  4. Do not give your pet complicated names. For example ‘Benjamin Button’ or something similar. The name should be short and simple and most importantly it should fit into the name tag of your dog. Complicated names confusing the dog and make it hard for him to relate to it.
  5. Adopted rescue dogs often already have a name that they are familiar with. Try not to change it as it might be difficult for the dog to get familiar with the new name. However if you loathe the name and want a new name for your pet try changing it to something similar to the existing name. For example Lucy can be changed to Lucky and likewise.
  6. If you have two or more pets do not give them similar sounding names. It will only lead to confusion and chaos. Also, the name of your pet should not be similar to a name of a family member. For example if your mother’s name is Molly try not to name your pet Holly or anything similar.

Keep these basic tips in mind and give your pet a suitable and appropriate name that suits his/her personality. You don’t have to be boring, go for the unusual but do not overdo it. Do your research religiously and find a perfect name for your life-long companion.
